Pileated Woodpecker

Woody Came By For A Visit
We get a visit from this woodpecker 2-3 times a year. Maybe he comes more often, but we only see him a few times each year. It loves pecking on those trees in the back yard. He really bangs away… it looks like he would have a bad headache after his hard pecking to get a few bugs to eat.

I was in the family room on the sofa and I saw a flash of red in the back yard. I quickly got my camera and began taking pictures. They were all taken through the glass because I was afraid I would scare the woodpecker away. Here’s a few of my pictures from yesterday.

Tennessee Granddaddy Says:
When ever I see a woodpecker I recall one of our children which called them peckerwoods. In fact, our kids had unique names for many things. Here’s a few:
  • Woodpeckers = Peckerwoods
  • Place Mats = Plate Mats
  • Stockings = Sockings
  •
  • (I’ll think of some more later, my mind went blank)
It pays to keep a camera close. You never know what you might see that you want to capture. I keep a camera beside the sofa in the family room. I also have a small camera in the car, and I never go on the lake without a camera.

Joke of the Day

Riley, Michael and Tyler were on a bus home from school. All of a sudden a fire-truck zoomed past them. They all saw the Dalmatian in the front of the truck sitting beside the driver.

Michael said "Hey, don't they use those dogs to clear out the crowd at a scene of a fire?"

Riley rudely interrupted saying "No stupid, the firemen use the dogs for good luck charms."

Fed up with his friends, Tyler interjected saying, "How come you guy's are so dumb? The fireman who drives the truck uses the Dalmatian to spot out the fire hydrant closest to the fire!!!"

Hey Jim, Those are great pics of "Woody". We had one this summer who thought the post on our screened in porch was a tree. Every day he would come back & peck in the same spot.
Hear you will be down to visit tomorrow. If you get a chance, give us a call.
