100% Inspection

Back in the days when I was working and teaching quality management and quality control methods, I would try to illustrate that 100% inspection was not the answer to good quality. The emphasis on quality should be to build in into the product and the process.

Studies have shown that 100% inspection only catches 95% of any defective product, at best. Sometimes to illustrate this, we would ask the class participants to count the number of F's in a sentence. I would give 15-30 seconds to look at a special sentence. Why don't you try it. Just count the number of F's in the sentence below:

OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

How many did you get? In my classes I've had a range of from 2 through 7. Most people get 3 F's. When people get 2, they usually get the F's in the first 2 words. The ones that get 3 also get "F" in the work "scientific". Most people miss the F's in the word "of".

The correct answer is six(6). The one person that got 7 F's, told me, "Well I counted 6, but added one because I thought I might have missed one".

Joke of the Day

A man and his wife make reservations at a nice restaurant. The man is stopped by the maitre d' and told that a tie is required. While his wife waits for him, he goes back to car to see if he can find a tie. He looks and looks to no avail. But he does find jumper cables in the trunk of his car.

He works with those jumper cables and ties a knot in them and has a make-shift tie. He goes back to the restaurant. He's stopped again. The maitre d' says, "That not a tie, that's jumper cables."

The man explains that they are tied in a nice knot, and should work. The maitre d' says, "Okay, I'll let you in, but don't you go in and start anything."
