Some Interesting Thoughts

Some I Agree With

  1. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch three consecutive times and still not know what time it is.
  2. Nothing hurts more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.
  3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
  4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
  5. Was learning cursive really necessary?
  6. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
  7. can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind-of tired.
  8. Bad decisions and bad luck make good stories.
  9. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
  10. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.
  11. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
  12. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
  13. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.
  14. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.
  15. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?
  16. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!
  17. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.
  18. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

Amazing!
I found the following link to something called the Virtual Turnpike, or Vpike. It works like this: Enter an address and it shows a picture of that particular address. I tried it for a few addresses and it worked, but it do not work for my home. I don’t think the Google Camera Vehicle has been down my street yet. Try it here:

Joke of the Day

An old man and woman were married for many years, even though they hated each other.  Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, "When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life !"

Neighbors feared him. They believed he practiced magic because of the many strange occurrences that took place in their neighborhood. The old man liked the fact that he was feared.

To everyone's relief, he died of a heart attack when he was 92. His wife had a closed casket at the funeral.
After the burial, she went straight to the local bar and began to party as if there was no tomorrow.

Her neighbors, concerned for her safety, asked "Aren't you afraid that he may indeed dig his way out of the
grave and haunt you for the rest of your life ?"
The wife put down her drink and said, "Let him dig.
I had him buried upside down. And I know he won't ask for directions!"

Beware the Free Stuff

Nothing is Really Free
Read the following. It came from a good friend. It’s about free stuff. Whether you contribute or receive, this is an important message:

The folks who are getting the free stuff don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... The people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 235 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that. In 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

Joke of the Day

A funeral director asked a young minister to hold a graveside service for a homeless man with no family or friends. The funeral was to be at a cemetery way out in the country. As this was a new cemetery, this man was the first to be laid to rest there.

The minister was not familiar with the area and became lost, but he finally found the cemetery about an hour later. The backhoe was there, and the crew was eating their lunch. The hearse was nowhere to be seen.

He apologized to the workers for being late. As he looked into the open grave, he saw the vault lid already in place. He told the workers he would not keep them long, but that this was the proper thing to do. The workers, still eating their lunch, gathered around the opening.

He was young and enthusiastic and poured out his heart and soul as he preached. The workers joined in with, "Praise the Lord," "Amen," and "Glory!" He got so into the service that he preached and preached and preached, from Genesis to Revelation.

When the service was over, he said a closing prayer and walked to his car. As he opened the door, he heard one of the workers say, "I never saw anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic systems for 20 years!"

A Visit Home
Yesterday I visited Mary and home in Knoxville. (We left there last Friday.) It still feels like a dream—the fact that Dad is gone. I miss him in so many ways.

While I was there I filled his bird feeders and watered his tomato plants. I felt like he was watching me while I was doing these things…

His tomato garden looks great. Ted, his next door neighbor put the cages up around the plants a few days ago. Here’s a couple of pictures of Dad’s Tomato Garden.

Joke of the Day

This is the story of our favorite blonde flying in a two-seat airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She frantically calls a May Day:

"May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead. And I don't know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!"

All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying:
"The is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position."

She says, "I'm 5'4" and I'm in the front seat."

"O.K." says the voice from the tower. "Repeat after me: Our Father. . . Who art in Heaven. . . .."

Graduation & Birthday
Yesterday Zachary graduated from 5th Grade and had his 11th Birthday! We shared in the fun of these two events which will become warm memories of the future. I took pictures and a few videos. I hurriedly put them together last night in a little YouTube Video. Excuse the quality, but I think it captures the fun we had.

A Couple of Pictures
I really enjoy the wonderful ability we have these days to capture pictures with these fantastic digital cameras. My phone does almost as good a job as my Canon camera, and I have it with me everywhere I go.

Kara and I were comparing our Canon cameras earlier this week. She’s got the best camera! Anyway, here’s a couple of pictures I snapped…

Beautiful Days

The Lake
I enjoyed getting on the lake today for a few hours. My friend Doug went with me and it gave me a chance to relax and reflect. It was a beautiful day. I thought of Dad many times while on the water. He would always tell me on any day the weather was nice, that this would be a good day to go fishing.

While we fished it seemed that was not the real reason to be on the water. I think I enjoyed nature more than I ever had. But we did catch fish. We caught 5 nice lake trout but only kept the 3 largest. I was lucky in catching the biggest one which weighed 4 pounds and 12 ounces.

Here’s a picture I took on South Holston Lake today.

Joke of the Day

A woman got on a bus holding a baby. The bus driver said, "That's the ugliest baby I've ever seen."

In a huff, the woman slammed her fare into the fare box and took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus.

The man seated next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her what was wrong.

"The bus driver insulted me," she fumed.

The man sympathized and said, "Why, he's a public servant and shouldn't say things to insult passengers."

You're right," She said. "I think I'll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind."

"That's a good idea," the man said. "Here, let me hold your monkey."

A New Chapter

Life Goes On
Dad is gone and we miss him so much. We go forward with wonderful memories that help the pain of loss. We know things will never be the same, but time does heal, but there will always be a scar.

One of our good friends wrote the following about Dad:

How do we say, "I am sorry and I am rejoicing for him in the same sentence!?". Where would you find a better man? Mr. Ray was a man that God had made like a wedge of gold...

Thanks to All
For all the family I want to thank everyone for their care, thoughts, and concerns for us during this time. Thanks for your comments on our blogs, your cards and letters, etc. We appreciate it very much. Friends help hold us up when we are weak.

Dad’s Tomato Garden Blog
We have been asked by Dad’s friends to leave his blog on line. We plan to do that. In the days to come we may add some thoughts and share some memories about Dad. So we’ll let his blog remain as a continuing tribute to him.

The tomato plants he planted earlier this year are really growing good. Dad’s next door neighbor, Ted, is caring for them. We’ll post some pictures of Dad’s garden and his tomatoes later in the year.

Tennessee Granddaddy’s Blog
Some have asked if I plan to continue my blog. The answer is YES. I started my blog because of Dad’s encouragement, and I plan to continue. However, in the next few weeks I may not be able to post as regularly as I have in the past, but I’ll do my best to make 2-3 posts per week.

We Are Sad & Grieving

I wanted to let my readers know that my Dad passed away this morning while he was in the hospital. The doctors postponed surgery yesterday and again earlier this morning because of some health issues.

Yesterday afternoon  he felt pretty good and was alert and talked to his visitors. Early this morning he was resting, was alert, and knew all the family that was with him. Around 9:00 AM or a little later he quickly turned for the worse and died around 10:15 AM while he was asleep.

No Surgery Today

The doctors are working with Dad to make him a little stronger before the surgery. The main issue is his oxygen level which dropped last night.

If things change I'll make another post.

Surgery Postponed Until Wednesday

Joint decision between the surgeon and medicine doctor: do the surgery tomorrow NOT TODAY.

We do not know when tomorrow.

Dad's Situation

I'm with Dad this morning in the hospital. The surgeon was here earlier and tells they do the surgery on his hip later today... 4-5 PM. The surgeon said they will have Dad walking some and sitting in a chair tomorrow. That's good news!

(They surgeon explained that he broke the ball off the hip joint. And that the surgery will be like a hip replacement. It will take about an hour.)

He's a little uncomfortable but not in pain. He talking a lot and would like to check his email, work on his blog, check his tomato plants, and feed the birds. That will come later.

Joke of the Day

Three men were talkin' about a new scheme, and one of them was an engraver. He said, "I can make a batch of money, and we'll pass it out and get rich."

He showed up with the money—all eighteen-dollar bills.

The other guys said, "You must be nuts! Nobody'll take an eighteen-dollar bill." He said, "Don't get excited. I know where we can get rid of 'em—down in Tennessee." They said, "Well, come on, let's go get rid of 'em fast."

They drove down to the mountains of Tennessee and they pulled up to a filling station in front of a little country grocery store. The owner came out and said, "Y'all wanna get something?" They said, "Yeah, fill it up with Hi-Test, boy."

The guy filled it up and said, "Anything else?"

One of them got out an eighteen-dollar bill and popped it a few times and said, "You got change for that?" The country boy looked it over a few times, popped it a couple of times, and said, "Oh yes. Whaddya want, three sixes or two nines?"

I'll make a post on his blog tomorrow to give a status report.

I will tell you he is in good spirits and taking things with patience.

Class Reunion

55 Years
I graduated from high school in 1957. We had a high school reunion just recently. It as nice to see these friends from the past. I think this was the best reunion we have ever had. Everybody’s old and just glad to be alive.

We have lost to death 30 of our class mates. As I remember our class was somewhere around 100 seniors. So it seems that 30% have died. That’s a sobering thought. Remember, life is precious.

Aging
Some people don’t seem to age. I noticed at our reunion that several looked like they did when we graduated. But many didn’t.

Here’s an example of aging that I saw recently on the internet. The 2 pictures below are of a famous movie star when she was young and famous, and now more recent. Would you ever of guessed that Brigitte Bardot would have aged like this?

Joke of the Day

An older man and his friend were having a conversation one night, and the topic drifted to memory, or lack of it. The first man mentions to his friend:

"My wife and I have been having a hard time remembering very simple things lately, and a friend recommended that we see this memory specialist doctor."

"Oh, well how is it working out for you?" asked the friend. "Has it helped either one of your memory's?"

"Very much so!" replied the man. "The results are incredible!!"

"What's the name of this doctor?" asked his friend.

"Hmm, its a really long last name I know," he replied. "Well, help me out for a second. What's the name of the one kind of flower, with the thorns, and that grows on a bush?"

"A rose?" said his friend.

"Yes, Yes! A rose!" says the man. "Rose dear, what's the name of that memory doctor we've been seeing?"

A Good Story of Life

Hot Chocolate and Life
The following was sent to me as a PowerPoint presentation with pictures of children and background music. I can’t share that with you on this blog, but I can share the words which have a good message:

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: "Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you're drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have.

  • Live simply.
  • Love generously.
  • Care deeply.
  • Speak kindly.
  • And enjoy your hot chocolate.

Not Really a joke, but a good story!

A 50-something year old Muslim man arrived at his seat on a crowded flight and immediately didn't want the seat. The seat was next to an elderly white woman reading her Bible.

Disgusted, the Muslim man immediately summoned the flight attendant and demanded a new seat. The man said "I cannot sit here next to this infidel." The flight attendant said "Let me see if I can find another
seat."

After checking, the flight attendant returned and stated "There are no more seats in economy, but I will check with the captain and see if there is something in first class."

About 10 minutes went by and the flight attendant returned and stated "The captain has confirmed that there are no more seats in economy, but there is one
in first class. It is our company policy to never move a person from economy to first class, but being that it would be some sort of scandal to force a person to sit next to an UNPLEASANT person, the captain
agreed to make the switch to first class."

Before the irate Muslim man could say anything, the attendant gestured to the elderly woman and said, "Therefore ma'am, if you would so kindly
retrieve your personal items, we would like to move you to the comfort of first class as the captain doesn't want you to sit next to an unpleasant person."

Passengers in the seats nearby began to applaud while some gave a standing ovation.

Ever Owned VW?

Yep!
We owned one of those bugs. It was red with a sunroof. It was a great little car. It was so ugly it was pretty!
Now they make some beautiful automobiles. In fact, I would not mind owning one of them.

A good friend send me this video about a VW factory in Germany. I was impressed, and I think you will enjoy it.

Joke of the Day

You are probably not very interested in any used farm equipment but I thought you might like to see this ad taken from Craig's List.

Fifty year old manure spreader - $1 (Washington, DC)

Fifty-year old manure spreader. Not sure of brand. Said to have been produced in Kenya .

Used for a few years in Indonesia before being smuggled into the US via Hawaii . Of questionable pedigree. Does not appear to have ever been worked very hard. Apparently it was pampered by various owners over the years. It doesn't work very often, but when it does it can really spread the manure and sling it for amazing distances. I am hoping to retire this manure spreader next November. But I really don't want it hanging around getting in the way afterwards. I would prefer a foreign buyer that is willing to relocate this manure spreader out of the country. I would be willing to trade this manure spreader for a nicely framed copy of the United States Constitution.
