Joke of the Day

If you are retired or considering retirement, you might learn something from my old friend, Bob.

Dear Friends:

It is important for men to remember that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as they did when they were younger. When men notice this, they should try not to yell.  Let me relate how I handle the situation.

When I got laid off from my consulting job and took "early retirement" in April, it became necessary for Nancy to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for health benefits that we need. It was shortly after she started working that I noticed that she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from fishing or hunting about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says that she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts supper. I try not to yell, instead I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she finally does get supper on the table.
She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. It is now not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after supper. I do what I can by reminding her several times each evening that they aren't cleaning themselves. I know she appreciates this, as it does seem to help her get them done before she goes to bed.  Now that she is older she seems to get tired so much more quickly.

Our washer and dryer are in the basement. Sometimes she says she just can't make another trip down those steps. I don't make a big issue of this.  As long as she finishes up the laundry the next evening I am willing to overlook it.  Not only that, but unless I need something ironed to wear to the Monday lodge meeting or to Wednesday's or Saturday's poker club or to Tuesday's or Thursday's bowling or something like that, I will tell her to wait until the next evening to do the ironing. This gives her little more time to do some of those odds and ends things like shampooing the dog, vacuuming or dusting.  Also, if I have had a really good day fishing, this allows her to gut and scale the fish at a more leisurely pace. Nancy is starting to complain a little occasionally.

For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. In spite of her complaining, I continue to try to offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days.  That way she won't have to rush so much.  I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any, if you know what I mean.
When doing simple jobs she seems to think she needs more rest periods.  She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard.  I try not to embarrass her when she needs these little extra rest breaks.  I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. I tell her that as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me and take her break by the hammock so she can talk with me until I fall asleep.  I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Nancy on a daily basis. I'm not saying that the ability to show this much consideration is easy.  Many men will find it difficult.  Some will find it impossible. No one knows better than I do how frustrating women can become as they get older. However, guys, even if you just yell at your wife a little less often because of this article, I will consider that writing it was worthwhile."

   Signed, Bob

Bob's funeral was on Saturday, January 25th.
Nancy was acquitted Monday, January 27th

The Alps

Night Time Lapse
Michael Rissi does some beautiful photography. Just look at the night time lapse shots he took of the Alps, mostly from cottages of the Swiss Alpine Club.

Update on Mary
On Feb. 4, my sister, Mary, had an evaluation by Dr. Hedera, who specializes in Parkinson's Disease at the Vanderbilt Clinic in Nashville. Dr. Hedera confirmed that Mary has Parkinson tremors, plus a second type of genetic tremor. These two types of tremors are related, but are so different that they have to be treated separately.

The doctor changed one of Mary's medications, for something a little stronger that he thought might be more effective. He also added a second prescription medication which held promise in reducing the tremors and improving muscle use. For some time Mary has not been able to walk with a normal gait. She also has great difficulty in rising from a sitting position. The doctor explained that both of these symptoms are the result of the muscles losing the ability to initiate movement, which is characteristic of Parkinson's Disease.

Dr. Hedera will be Mary's doctor on this illness, and a computer network account has been set up for their direct communication. Mary also submitted a blood sample which will be used anonymously in Vanderbilt's research efforts. Her follow-up appointment will be in 4 months.

Joke of the Day

A rancher named Clyde had a car accident. In court, the trucking company's fancy lawyer was questioning Clyde.
"Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine,'" asked the lawyer.

Clyde responded, "Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule, Bessie, into the..."

"I didn't ask for any details", the lawyer interrupted. "Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!'?

Clyde said, "Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...

"The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question."

By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule, Bessie."

Clyde thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting, real bad and didn't want to move.

However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun in hand, looked at me, and said "How are you feeling?"

"Now what the heck would you say?"

Power of the Badge

A Good Laugh Today
Here’s cute story/joke that I think you will enjoy…

DEA DEA officer stops at a ranch in Texas , and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs."

The rancher says, "Okay , but don't go in that field over there," as he points out the location.

The DEA officer verbally explodes saying, " Mister,  I have the authority of the Federal Government with me."  Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher.  "See this badge?  This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish... On any land.  No questions asked or answers given.  Have I made myself clear?  Do you understand? "

The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores.

bullA short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher's big bull...

With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he'll get gored  before he reaches safety.  The officer is clearly terrified.

The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs...

" Your badge. Show him your BADGE ! "

Joke of the Day

A woman was standing in front of the mirror. She frowns. She is not happy with what she is seeing. She tells her husband, “I look old, fat and ugly… and my hair is a total mess.” What I need is a compliment from you to make me feel better.

Her husband says, “Well honey, all I can say is that your eyesight is near perfect!”

Joke of the Day

Sue was out walking with her 4-year-old granddaughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. Grandma took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that.

'Why?' the Granddaughter asked.

'Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs,' Grandma replied.

At this point, the granddaughter looked at her Grandmother with total admiration and asked, 'Grandma, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart.'

Sue did some quick thinking and said.... 'All Grandmas know this stuff.  It's on the Grandma Test. You have to know it or they don't let you be a Grandma.'

They walked along in silence for a few minutes, but the Granddaughter was evidently pondering this new information. 'Oh......I get it!' she beamed, 'So if you don't pass the test you have to be the Grandpa?'.

'Exactly,' Grandma replied with a big smile on her face.

Joke of the Day

A group of 40-year-old buddies discuss and discuss where they should meet for dinner.. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at Gasthaus Gutenberger restaurant because the waitress's there are young and pretty.

10 years later, at 50 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gasthaus Gutenberger because the food there is very good and the wine selection is good also.

10 years later at 60 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gasthaus Gutenberger because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is smoke free.

10 years later, at 70 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gasthaus Gutenberger because the restaurant is wheel chair accessible and they even have an elevator.

10 years later, at 80 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss and discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed upon that they should meet at the Gasthaus Gutenberger because that would be a great idea because they have never been there before.

The Birthday

Birthday & Snow
On Beverly’s birthday we woke up to 7 inches of snow. We wondered if we would be able to go out and celebrate. Later in the evening we
decided to try it and we went to Texas Road House for a meal with Kevin, Lesley, Kara & Zachary. After the meal we came here for ice cream cake.

Let me tell you about this cake that was not a cake. Since Beverly can’t have wheat products, this cake was 100% ice cream except for the icing. The inside was 1/2 Swiss chocolate and 1/2 white chocolate ice cream. It came from the Marble Slab in Kingsport, TN. It was delicious!

Joke of the Day

I didn't know this about Las Vegas,

This may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas but there are more Catholic Churches than Casinos.

Not surprisingly, many worshipers at Sunday services will give casino chips rather than money when the basket is passed. Since the chips come from many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to collect the offerings.

The churches send all the chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in.

This is all done by the chip monks.
