There’s Always a Trick

You have probably been sent a link like this one: Guess Your Number

Go ahead and try it out. If you did, you might say how in the world did they know the number I guessed. Believe me there’s no magic in this at all. Let me explain…

Here’s the first screen. (When I first posted this I had 23, a green number selected. However, it was nearly impossible to see the difference in green & blue on the next screen. So I changed it to 24 which was a black number.)
Here you pick your number and tell what color it is. That automatically limits the answer to one of five possible numbers. Let’s say we pick number “24”. We then click black. The computer knows the number we have chosen is 8, 24, 11,19, or 7.	There are 25 numbers above: 1-25
This screen has nothing to do with the game. The programmer put this in as a step to make you think there is some magic going on.
Here is where he gets your number. Each house is set up to contain only 1 number of each color. For example our House would be “House B”, since we chose “24” as our number. Once we tell the computer our number was in house “B” it knows our number. This is because none of the other numbers in house “D” were black when we first picked our number.	There are 30 numbers above. the numbers 26 thru 30 were added in to make it look more complicated. (There’s only one number of each color in each house.) House B is made up of the following numbers: 10 was blue, 26 was missing 24 was black, 9 was green, 21 was pink, and 2 was red. Hence, since it knows our color was black to begin with our number has to be 24!
This screen does nothing. It is supposed to make you think there is some magic in this. There is no magic involved.

Now we see the number we picked. It was 24. Magic? No. Tricky? A little.  Interesting? Yes Now you know.
